Roald Dahl does an amazing job telling this story and my students love reading it during guided reading. I created this packet to use during the weeks that I teach this story. This packet has absolutely everything that you need to teach all that the story has to offer, and believe me there is so much!
Included in the packet:
~Common Core State Standards that are covered in this unit.
~Unit Guide with vocabulary, skill/strategy and word work.
~Anchor Charts: There is an anchor chart for each skill and strategy that is used/talked about in this unit.
They include: predicting, visualizing, character traits with words and actions, character relationships, fantasy, realistic, cause and effect, setting, mood, comparing characters, synonyms, adjectives, similes, humor, summary with beginning, middle, end and story elements.
~Before Reading Activity – Predicting and background knowledge
I then split this text up into 7 sections. Each section has the following:
~Ready to Read- Intro to the section and what is being focused on during group.
~Vocabulary word cards and activity
~Oral discussion questions
~Reading Response sheet or journal entry
I included a cumulative activity which has students write a summary. Since there is so much talk about figurative language I included a simile workbook. I also included 2 writing/extension activities once they are done reading the text. And one last thing…a spinner with generic comprehension questions.
